Utility companies seeking donations for assistance program

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company are encouraging customers to assist community members who may have difficulty paying their heating bills during the winter months.
The utility companies will match $2 for every $1 donated by residential customers to the utilities' heating assistance programs now through March 31, 2014.
The utilities first announced plans to increase this year's donations in October following the recent federal government shutdown when funds for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) were expected to be delayed. LIHEAP appointments for subsidy assistance are scheduled to begin Nov. 12.
"Each year our community steps up to assist their fellow neighbors and we want to stretch that support further. We want to ensure individuals are least able to pay their heating bills have greater access to the assistance funds supported by our companies and our customers," said Cheryl Bruner, customer service and marketing director for LG&E and KU.
"We encourage customers to join what thousands of their neighbors are doing and consider making a tax-deductible donation to this program as well," Bruner said.
Over the last five years, customer donations and matching funds from the utilities have raised more than $1.67 million, with approximately $923,000 of that amount donated by the companies. These funds have assisted thousands of families in paying their heating bills.
Residential customers may donate to the assistance programs by making a monthly pledge or a one-time contribution.
Eligibility for heating assistance benefits is determined by third-party nonprofit organizations. The programs assist families in difficult financial situations. The utilities play no part in determining eligibility. Families in need of assistance will be interviewed by the third-party nonprofit organizations.
