LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dozens of March of Dimes supporters released lanterns into the sky Thursday, brining awareness to babies born premature.

An estimated 15 million babies are born premature every year and more than a million of them do not survive.

The US has one of the highest prematurity rates of any industrialized country.

Kentucky has made progress but there is still room for improvement -- 12.7 percent of babies born in the state are born pre-term.

March of Dimes works to fund research and education to help mothers reach full-term in their pregnancies.
