LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- At Thursday night's U of L women's basketball game, the first round of drinks were on coach Jeff Walz.

"Trying to figure a way to give back to our fans and thought a drink would be great. It went from soda to beer and if you're of age and like to have one, great," said Walz.

The first 2,500 fans who were 21 years or older got a drink voucher.

"I just wanted to give a thanks to all of our crowd, the ones that come out here day in and day out and support our program, support our young ladies," he told WDRB.

The fans seemed to appreciate the gesture.

"I think it's great he gave us the opportunity to come and watch the team and gave us some beer. So on behalf of card nation, we love you Jeff," said Ashley Meredith.

Others hope it'll bring in some new faces.

"I think it's great. I think it's going to draw people and that's what people need to do. They need to come to these games and see that these girls are really that good," said Mike Harper.

Thursdays are already $2 beer night so Walz estimates his tab to be around $5,000.

"It's well worth it. This city's been great for me. The seven years I've been here, this is a small token to give back to our fans," Walz said.

Walz says the idea originated during a marketing meeting and he likes the results.

"It's given our program the opportunity to be seen and I think a lot of people who may not have followed women's basketball before, decide to take a look," he said.
