Archbishop Kurtz says he is deeply honored to lead Conference of Catholic Bishops

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's Archbishop is talking to the local media for the first time since taking on a new role with the Catholic church.

On Tuesday, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz was elected president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Kurtz says he is deeply honored the body of bishops elected him to serve as president.  He also addressed critics who say he has either ignored or minimized the wrongdoing of sex offender priests:  "The steps are zero tolerance, so that there's no one in active ministry within the church."

Kurtz says he will be able to do a lot of the work as president of the conference from his office in Louisville -- however, it will also require some travel.
