Some time back, humorist Dave Barry did an article comparing the two major political parties. What he said was that if you were broken down beside the road, the Republicans would drive right by on their way to "Ugly Pants Night" at the country club. On the other hand, the Democrats would stop and try to help but somehow set your car on fire.
That brings us to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.
It looks like they have set our health care system on fire, not that we shouldn't have seen it coming.
Our first clue was when the bill that was produced ran to over a thousand pages. That should have made us really nervous. My first civilian career was with the Federal government. We had a health care plan called the Federal Employees Health Benefit Plan, a wonderful program with lots of choices. It's my understanding that the law establishing this plan was just sixteen pages. Sixteen!
Our second clue was when they said they would hire thousands of new IRS agents to help enforce the plan. Thousands! IRS agents! At this point, we should have been sweating bullets.
And finally, the (then) Speaker of the House said we needed to pass the bill to find out what was in it. At this point, the country should have gone into a full-bore linear panic.
It didn't and now we have it. Good luck, America. I'm pulling for you. Remember, we're all in this together.
