Push to sell wine and liquor at Kentucky grocery stores

Louisville, Ky. (WDRB) -- Other states have done it for years, but on Tuesday Kentucky could be one step closer to selling wine and liquor at grocery stores.

At places like Kroger, you can already buy beer. But local retailers are waiting on Tuesday's hearing.

A federal appeals court is set to consider the validity of a ruling striking down the state's seven-decade old ban on selling wine and liquor at grocery stores, gas stations and other retailers.

Allen Moss, a customer, says, "I think it's great that they would sell liquor and wine. It's more convenient. It's allowed in other states. I've used it in other states. It's great and it's more convenient for the customer and it's not really going to delay anything or change anything."

Another customer, Ryan Slipke, says, "It doesn't bother me one way or the other if they sell wine or liquor here. It's up to us as consumers who vote with our dollars at that point."

Kroger spokesman Tim McGurk says the Food with Wine Coalition lobbied the issue with the Kentucky Legislature for three sessions beginning in 2008. Then, the Coalition filed the lawsuit in early 2011.

If the decision is upheld at the hearing, it will allow grocers to apply for licenses to sell wine and liquor.

While liquor and wine have been sold at grocery stores in other states, including Indiana, some wonder why Kentucky doesn't have the same regulations.

Moss says, "I think part of it is due to church groups. I think part of it is because bourbon is made here, so distillers try to tow a finer line than other states. I just think there are some social issues here."

Slipke says, "Culture and tradition, those are hard things to break. I'm from South Carolina. They have similar laws down there too. Culture is ingrained in people."

Kroger says it's anxiously awaiting the decision which may not come right away.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Cincinnati.
