LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary -- and brought in a special guest Tuesday morning to mark the occasion.
His name is Joey, and he's a large detailed puppet who is one of the stars of War Horse, which opens Tuesday night. Joey takes three people to bring to life.
Two of them spend the entire performance inside Joey. Besides making very precise horse-like movements, the puppeteers also have to work together to create the animal's unique sounds.
Several sets of puppeteers perform as Joey and another horse. They switch roles, which means that each performance of War Horse is unlike every other performance.
War Horse tells the story of Joey, who is enlisted to fight for the English during World War I. He's caught in a crossfire and ends up fighting on both sides of the war. His young owner Albert, who is not old enough to enlist, heads out on a mission to find his horse and bring him home.
