COLUMBUS, Ind. (WDRB) - A 26-year-old woman was found murdered inside a southern Indiana apartment. The woman's body was discovered on Tuesday afternoon inside a unit at the Riverstone Apartments in Columbus.
Columbus Police say 36 year old Ryan Klug is now charged in the case. Police issued an arrest warrant for Klug Wednesday.
Det. Matt Myers with Columbus police says, "We really do need to locate him to try to get more information on what took place."
Police say Klug's name is on the lease at the apartment where the woman's body was discovered.
"From the information gathered there at the scene and from the observation of the detectives we classify this now as a homicide investigation," says Lt. Myers.
Lt. Myers doesn't know why, but says an employees at the apartment complex went to check on the woman and discovered the body. Since then, Klug has been missing.
"We do not think that he is in this area at this time," says Lt. Myers.
Right now police aren't releasing the victim's name because her family lives in another country and doesn't even know she's dead. Lt. Myers explains, "We are currently in the process of trying to notify the next of kin; they obviously don't live here in the states."
Police believe Klug may be driving a 2008 silver or gray Subaru Legacy. It has an Indiana license plate number 357 BPC.
"Anybody who comes in contact with him or has had contact with him for the last couple of days is asked to contact the police department," says Lt. Myers. According to Klug's Facebook page, he is a highway designer for the Indiana Department of Transportation, however, he hasn't posted anything since last month.
Meanwhile, crime scene tape is still up at the scene and a police cruiser remains posted outside the apartment, that's despite the fact that police suspect Klug is long gone.
"We aren't for sure that he is not here but we don't believe that he is but I'd rather not say why at this point," says Lt. Myers.
An autopsy is being performed to determine exactly how long the victim has been dead. Anyone with information about Klug's whereabouts should contact the Columbus Police Department at 812-376-2600.
