Rebuilding nearly complete in southern Indiana 20 months after tornado

MARYSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Twenty months after the devastating March 2nd tornado, the group leading the recovery is wrapping up its last major project - the rebuilding of one structure that has come to symbolize the recovery of an entire region.

For generations, the Marysville Community Center had literally been the center of life in this small town. And soon, it will be again.

After the storm, the Marysville Community Center was little more than a pile of rubble.

Residents feared the building, which had served first as a school, then a community gathering place since the 1930s, would have to be torn down.

"You didn't think there was any way that it would ever look right again. And to see it getting redone is just wonderful," said resident Judy Bassey.

Workers today were busing putting on the finishing touches.

The price tag for the rebuild, one-quarter million dollars, much of it paid for with private funds raised by March 2 Recovery.

"On the inside, we literally took it down to the bare masonry brick walls and started from scratch," said Dave Poe of March 2 Recovery.

In fact, Marysville itself nearly had to start from scratch. It was almost wiped out by the storm. And though the scars remain, life is returning.

The rebuilding of the community center is an important symbol.

"I think people are getting more encouraged to start thinking about maybe moving back, maybe starting a family here, and thinking about the future rather than the past," said township trustee William Bussey.

March 2 Recovery still has a handful of homes to complete in the three counties it serves. But this is the last major project. The job is nearly complete.

"It's an honor for people to entrust you with their pain, and their needs, and to work together with them to rebuild," said March 2 Recovery Director Carolyn King.

The new Marysville Community Center is scheduled to open by New Year's Eve.

"We all helped each. other. There was a lot going on. It's just a symbol of renewal I think," said resident Pat Helton.

On Thursday, Nov. 21, March 2 Recovery will hold a wrap-up celebration, a thank-you to all those who helped rebuild not just Marysville, but all of the Southern Indiana communities ravaged by the March 2nd tornado.

The event will be held at IVY Tech in Sellersburg from 3:30 - 5:30.
