Kynect continues to grow enrollment, majority for Medicaid

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nearly 48,000 people have signed up for healthcare through the Kentucky insurance exchange.

The state-run database, Kynect, allows people to shop for health insurance and apply for subsidies.

According to the state website, 82% of the enrollment has been for Medicaid coverage.

Critics say the high number of Medicaid enrollees shows that the Affordable Care Act is simply becoming a Medicaid expansion. Unless that number shrinks, they say, the program could experience funding issues.

Governor Beshear's office, however, cautions against reading too much into early numbers. A spokesperson with the Governor's office says they expect to see an increase in private pay by the end of December.

Nationally, Kynect continues to receive praise for it's success in getting people enrolled.

Officials say it's in part due to the fact that you can browse plans before registering--unlike the federal exchange.

Across the bridge in Indiana, there is no state-run insurance exchange. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, 701 Hoosiers have signed up for healthcare through the federal exchange.
