Bullitt Co. man arrested on rape charges 23 years after alleged incident

BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB)-- A Bullitt County man is behind bars for something police say he did 23 years ago.

55-year-old Gregory Halbauer is accused of raping a close family member over the course of several years.  The alleged victim is now an adult and recently confronted him.  That's how detectives at the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office got involved.

"It has been very hard; I've been very depressed, anxious.  It's just been so hard to deal with this," said the alleged victim.

It may have been hard, but this woman says she just did something she has wanted to do for 20 years.  "It's just a scary situation."

WDRB hid her face and identity because she is an alleged rape victim, but she says it started in the 90s when she was just 11 years old.  "It was like a big weight lifted off my shoulders."

Bullitt County Sheriff's detectives say Halbauer is a close family member.  The alleged victim says she and her psychiatrist recently confronted Halbauer and that, surprisingly, he confessed to the crime.

"He hesitated at first, but then I think he saw how hurt I was and he came forward," she explained.

"It did occur in the 1990s and it occurred over numerous years, both sodomy, sexual abuse and rape," said Lt. Mike Murdoch, with the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.

U.S. Marshals arrested the suspect this week, but he tried to make a run for it.  "When they arrived to arrest him, he ran from the marshals inside the home," said Lt. Murdoch.

Halbauer was eventually taken into custody and taken brought to the Bullitt County Detention Center and now detectives are looking for more victims.

"Based upon the information that was told to us...we believe strongly that there is at least one, possibly more victims," said Lt. Murdoch.

"I'm a lot stronger now, I was very weak then," said the alleged victim.

She also hopes what she's doing will encourage others to do the same.  "I hope if there's anybody out there that they will come forward, you can do this."

Halbauer is being held on a $200,000 cash bond.
