Central High students receive driving safety message

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Stay safe and alert behind the wheel -- that was the message for students at Central High School, who got firsthand experience with an accident scene Friday morning.

But the crashed cars and simulated injuries were just a drill.  It was part of an effort to teach the teens about the dangers of texting while driving, and driving under the influence.

Drama students at the school played the part of the crash victims.

Students say the program will make them think twice about pulling out their phone behind the wheel.

Phillip Francis, a Central High senior, told WDRB News, "Driving every day, I get phone calls, text messages. It's tempting, you know, but stuff does happen in mere seconds. Someone runs into the back of your car, someone runs out in the middle of the street.  It's very scary."

LMPD's traffic unit, the county's EMS services, and the coroner's office teamed up for the presentation.
