LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police have kicked off the fourth annual "Cram the Cruiser" food drive.  The campaign collects non-perishable food items for needy families, and runs through Dec. 13.

All 16 KSP posts around the state as well as the headquarters in Frankfort have established collection sites.  Last year's campaign collected more than 100,000 pounds of food.

KSP spokesman Tpr. Paul Blanton said in a news release, "We were so pleased with the results, hard work and effort from each of our posts last year.  It is a wonderful opportunity to give back to those in local communities who are struggling financially during the holiday season."

Blanton says the food will be distributed to shelters, churches, and other organizations helping the needy.  Suggested donations include canned fruit and vegetables, canned meat, macaroni and cheese, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, canned soups, chili or spaghetti sauce, brownie and cake mixes, coffee, water, powdered milk, and juices.
