LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Buffalo Trace has opened its new Experimental Barrel Warehouse.
Warehouse X will enhance whiskey research for a distillery that says it's taking its quest for the perfect bourbon even further.
The warehouse can hold up to 150 barrels. There's also four independently operating chambers that allow specific variables to be tested in order to determine their effect on aging barrels.
A tornado that hit one of their distillery warehouses in 2006 helped inspire this idea.
"And the bourbon barrels that were in there were left exposed to the elements for about 9 months before we were able to repair that roof. And we jokingly said, 'we should bottle this whiskey and call it the tornado whiskey'. We did and it has gotten rave reviews. It's delicious," said Amy Peske, PR and events manager at Buffalo Trace
Warehouse X has a barrel breezeway with an open air rick underneath a roof in which a small number of barrels will age while being exposed to the natural elements.
