KET receives $1.14 million for early childhood education

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Early learning efforts in Kentucky just got a big boost. Some of the regions largest foundations gave over one million dollars to an initiative that provides free interactive activities and videos to educators and parents.

$1.14 million in grants were given to the Everyday Learning Collaborative Tuesday. The money comes from the James Graham Brown Foundation and the PNC Foundation.

The Everyday Learning Collaborative is a partnership among Kentucky Educational Television (KET), the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) and Metro United Way. The partnership is focused on increasing early childhood educator effectiveness and family engagement.

KET officials say the grant will be used to develop "unique and effective" resources for early childhood educators and families throughout the state.

Educational videos and interactive activities will be among the resources. KET says all will be accessible online for no cost.

Free, hands-on training with the materials will also be offered to more than 1,000 early childhood educators, according to KET.

Supporters hope the material will reach across state lines and economic barriers.

"Programs like this send a message," said Mayor Greg Fischer. "They're not just going to help us here in Louisville, they are going to help kids around the country, and parents around the country--many of whom didn't grow up in an environment that stresses early stimulation and reading."

For Congressman John Yarmuth, funding early childhood education is only one way of ensuring the success of our future generations.

"We need to make sure that no kid comes to school hungry, that no kid is homeless, or denied healthcare," said Yarmuth. "These are the things we are fighting for everyday in Washington."
