Shoppers support local stores for ‘Small Business Saturday'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)---Christmas shopping is underway, and after the rush at big businesses comes the push to shop locally.

Cities across the country celebrated 'Small Business Saturday', which is a day to support and give your local stores a boost for the holiday.

And there's no better way to show that you love your city than to shop at one of our local, authentic and occasionally weird stores here in Louisville," says Louisville's Mayor, Greg Fischer.

"Black Friday is for the malls and the box stores, and this is our big kickoff shopping day for the season," says Mary Baron, co-owner of Amazing Green Planet.

The day is catching on with "shop small" bags, and stickers that say "I bought local today".

The effort to shop local continues to grow.

"Whether it's restaurants, retail organizations, service organizations, or just your barber shops and salons that create so much of the flavor of our community," says Congressman John Yarmuth.

"It's a cool idea. I think that a lot of cities that get it. It really does benefit the local community. You don't see it everywhere. It's a neat that there's a presence here and people understand why it's beneficial," says Moxie Greenwell, a local shopper.

Reports show that for every $100 dollars spent at a locally owned store, $55 dollars is reinvested in the community. For a chain store, studies show only $14 dollars is re-invested.

With more and more awareness every year about this day to shop locally, employees are hoping shoppers will take notice.

Julia Roberts, with Red Tree Furniture, says she's already seen a difference this holiday season.

"I think it's brought out a lot more business and I mean, I'm all about it. Shop local, that's the best way to go, right," says Julia Roberts.

On Saturday, the Louisville Independent Business Alliance also started their annual contest to encourage people to shop local.

If you shop at 5 local stores, you can be entered to win $1,000 dollars.
