Desales brings home first 2A state title

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WDRB) - The DeSales Colts football team captured their first 2A state championship today over Newport Central Catholic, 34-26.

Dylan Byrd ran for two touchdowns and caught another one as DeSales defeated Newport Central Catholic 34-26 in the KHSAA Class 2A championship game Saturday at Houchens Industries L.T. Smith Stadium.

The win gave DeSales (14-1) its first-ever state championship.

Byrd ran for touchdowns of 73 yards and six yards while finishing the day with 142 rushing yards. He caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Roush.

Roush completed 8-of-12 passes for 158 yards and two scores. He added 87 yards on the ground for DeSales.

Newport Central Catholic quarterback Mac Franzen threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and finished with 318 passing yards. Tommy Donnelly caught two scores for 63 and 14 yards and finished with nine catches for 203 yards for Newport Central Catholic (10-5), the defending Class 2A champions.
