Accused possible school shooter arraigned in court

Posted: Updated:

MT. WASHINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) - Nicolas Bain, the 18-year old accused of planning an elementary school shooting was arraigned Monday morning. Bain was arrested in Bullitt County Dec. 7th on terroristic threatening charges. He is accused of making threats to shoot and kill children at Old Mill Elementary School.

In a statement from the Mt. Washington Police Department, Chief Roy Daugherty says officers arrested Bain after receiving a tip that Bain planned to go to the school "armed with firearms and kill students."

A police report also states Bain "specifically made threats to kill his neighbor who goes to Old Mill Elementary School."

Police say the tip led to an investigation, and although they would not detail the findings, they say they found enough evidence to arrest him.

Bain is currently being held in the Bullitt County Detention Center. His bond is set at $25,000 cash.

People claiming to be relatives of the 18-year old told WDRB News the incident is simply a misunderstanding and that any statements made "were a joke." Those family members did not wish to be identified and declined to make further comment when pressed by a reporter about what statements were made by Bain.

Eric Farris with Bullitt County Public Schools says they are treating today's school day like any other, but are taking the threat very seriously. Schools are working hard to ensure the safety of all students.

Bullitt County Public Schools confirms Bain is a student at Bullitt East High School.

In a statement, Chief Daugherty drew on school shootings elsewhere in the country to drive home the severity of such alleged threats: "In light of all the tragic events involving active shooters happening across the country, our agency considers all threats of that type credible until they are proven to be otherwise."

The Bullitt County School District sent an email to parents late Sunday night saying: "It has been reported to school officials than an 18-year-old teenager has been arrested for terroristic threatening related to Old Mill Elementary School. The individual is in custody at the Bullitt County Detention Center and poses no danger whatsoever to the students of Bullitt County Schools. School officials and local law enforcement are working together to exchange information. School will resume as normal on Monday and security is in place as usual. We encourage parents to go about their usual routine tomorrow, but school officials are always happy to address any questions or concerns."
