Cement company employee killed while directing traffic on Dixie Highway

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A worker for a local cement company died on the job Tuesday night.

The Jefferson County coroner's office identifies the man as Robert "Bernie" Allen, 59, of Battletown, in Meade County, Ky.

Police say Allen, a Kosmos Cement employee, was trying to stop traffic for a backhoe in the 15000 block of Dixie Highway near Depot Lane when he was struck by a Chevy pickup truck.

Investigators say the employee had taken precautions.

"Apparently he had a stop sign and the clothing he needed to do the job he was trained to do," said LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell.

Allen died of multiple blunt force injuries at the scene, deputy coroner Jo Ann Farmer said.

Mitchell says the pickup truck driver simply did not see the cement worker holding the stop sign. The driver will not be charged.
