Kokomo, Ind. denied federal disaster relief funds

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kokomo, Ind. will not be getting help from the federal government after last month's tornadoes and severe storms. Ind. Gov. Mike Pence says the federal government has rejected Indiana's request that Howard County be declared a major disaster area.

Pence has ordered the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to appeal the decision.

The state had asked FEMA to approve grants and low-interest loans to help homeowners and businesses. Nearly 200 homes had major damage or were destroyed, and nearly 1,000 homes overall were damaged in Howard County.
