Louisville firefighters go Christmas shopping for children

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville firefighters were helping children in a different way Friday.

The firefighters were shopping for Christmas presents for children who have lost their homes in fires or natural disasters. About 150 children are on their shopping list.

"We see these people the first time," Brian O'Neill, president of the Professional Firefighters Union. "They are having the worst day of their lives and we're the first people on scene trying to help them out.  And this way, we can see them again on the back end to provide a nice Christmas for these kids, and help out these families that have suffered so much throughout the year."

Firefighters will take all the toys to a big party for the children next week at the American Red Cross. It will include games and food, and Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive on a fire truck to hand out the presents.
