Grandmother escapes from burning Hikes Point home

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville grandmother escaped her burning Hikes Lane home early Friday thanks to her smoke detector.

The woman awoke to the sound of the detector around 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 13. She saw flames from her room, ran outside, and flagged down a passerby.

That person then called for help. Fire crews took a little more than 10 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Investigators say the fire was started by an electrical short on an extension cord.
