CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (WDRB) -- An early morning fire in southern Indiana spread from a garage and destroyed a family home.

Firefighters were called to a home on Stoneview Drive in Charlestown before 4 a.m. on Wednesday on reports of a garage fire, but the flames spread to the house.

Two people managed to escape the flames along with several cats and dogs.

Temperatures in the 20s hindered efforts to fight the fire. Ice formed as firefighters sprayed water on the flames. Crews also had to bring water from a nearby reservoir for the Ohio River because there were no hydrants in the River's Edge subdivision.

"The flames took control of the whole house actually. We had a partial collapse in the roof area," said Andre Heal, Asst. Chief for the Charlestown Fire Dept.

Crews from both Charlestown and New Washington fire departments helped fight the fire.
