UPS knuckles down for holiday "peak week"

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It takes a lot of manpower and state-of-the-art technology for UPS to get millions of packages delivered on time this holiday season, during what it calls "peak week."

UPS wants to make sure the packages that move through the air hub here in Louisville make it to their destinations on time. Our cameras were at UPS Worldport overnight to capture all of the activity (see video player above).

"This is peak week," said Jeff Wafford, UPS spokesman. "This is the busiest week of the year, so every day from now until Christmas, we'll move about 3 million packages through Louisville."

UPS says it's been prepared to handle the increased volume since the number of people shopping online continues to grow.

"People ordering online -- the e-commerce -- it's really affected how we ship things," said Wafford.

"We've certainly seen that extra e-commerce volume come through Worldport," Wafford said.

To meet the heavy demand this time of year, the company has hired about 55,000 temporary workers nationwide.

"I think a lot of people are tired, but excited," said Tara Carter, a UPS supervisor.

Thirteen-hundred workers have been added here in Louisville.

"We do bring in a lot of seasonal people, and we spend a lot of time throughout the year training our employees to be ready for this week," Carter said.

In addition, UPS uses every one of the company's 237 aircraft and charters another 23 planes to get the job done. UPS says people can ship as late as Monday to get their packages to their destinations by Christmas Eve, but only if you use the company's premium next-day service.

"We are Santa Clause to a lot of people because we'll be delivering those Christmas gifts as late as Christmas Eve afternoon in some cases," Wafford said.

UPS is expected to deliver more than a half-billion packages around the world over the holidays. That would be an all time record.
