LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- They call it the most exciting minute in racing.

Fifth graders at Brandeis Elementary hosted the Kentucky Run for the Roaches, Thursday, Dec. 19.

It's all part of a science project. The kids have been feeding and taking care of the bugs for three weeks.

They even gave the roaches Derby-style names.

The students have also been using their geometry and measuring skills to build the racetracks.

"It's a combination of math, science, there's library research involved. So we try to get as many subject areas integrated as possible," said fifth grade science teacher Susan Beuhner.

The winning trainers got roses, plus an ice cream party for their whole class.

The winning roach even got its own rose garland!
