Louisville stores extending hours for last-minute Christmas shoppers

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Just a little more than four days left for Christmas shopping -- but if you haven't yet finished, don't despair. Some stores are extending their hours for last-minute shoppers.

A recent survey from the National Federation of Retailers said only one in 10 shoppers had completed their Christmas shopping. Greg Franklin is one of the shoppers who hasn't.

"I'm just getting started," Franklin said. "My job keeps me busy, and I am just now getting a chance to get out here."

So is Amy Hightchew.

"Almost finished," she said. "A few last-minute things I need to get...I will probably be out tomorrow."

For many stores, the Saturday before Christmas is usually the biggest Saturday of the year for retailers. Shoppers can still find good deals.

"A lot of stores are going to do similar sales like they did on Black Friday," said Jacob Sappenfield, general manager at Oxmoor Center. "Some may do even a little bit more because the shopping season was compressed a little bit more due to a later Thanksgiving. It's enhanced December."

Because it's a shorter Christmas shopping season, retailers are going all-out to get as many people as they can into their stores by staying open extra hours.

"The longer they are open, the more they are making their merchandise available to the consumer, and it's obviously working," Franklin said. "If it wasn't working, they wouldn't be doing it. So these extended hours are something we are going to continue to see."

Macy's at Oxmoor will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily and until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Some other major chain stores will be open around-the-clock until late Christmas Eve.

"I think its kind of crazy," Hightchew said. "But I know a lot of people will be out at 2 a.m., but it won't be me."

"It's good for people like me, but it's hard on employees, I would think," Franklin said. "I think that is a little crazy and intense and I always try to get my shopping done early to avoid the crowds at the last minute,"

Snow two weeks ago may have kept some shoppers away, but they'll have plenty of time and warmer weather this weekend to catch up.

Kohl's is among the stores staying open around-the-clock until late Christmas Eve -- and Toys R Us begins its around-the-clock hours starting Saturday.
