Local shops benefit from Christmas Eve shoppers

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- Are you one of many shoppers who hit the stores on Christmas Eve frantically searching for last minute gifts?

Local retail stores say they benefit from your procrastination.

"We've done 117 transactions today," said Tyler Trotter, owner of Louisville Beer Store.

The Louisville Beer Store was packed with customers when WDRB visited on Christmas Eve.

"We've been open every Christmas Eve and every Christmas Eve we see more and more business," said Trotter.

Trotter says his clientele are all coming through the door for the same reason: last minute gifts.

"Tons of gift sets. Lots of Christmas beer," he told WDRB.

Trotter says it's about convenience for his customers.

21:39 Tyler"It's nice to think someone can come in here last minute like on their way to a family dinner and grab some beer."

The payoff is good too.

A couple blocks down from the beer store is another locally owned shop with their doors open on Christmas Eve: Barry Wooley Designs.

"We definitely get a lot of retail sales those days so we're fully staffed, ready to go at all locations," said Executive Vice President Jude Loew.

Loew says they're always open on Christmas Eve because business is good.

"Last minute shoppers, people trying to buy the last minute gift of course and we offer gift wrapping so they like that fact that we can just take care of the whole thing," he said.

Loew says it's also a good time to make their customers aware of the sales they'll have going on after Christmas.

"We're doing 20% off all in store merchandise and 50% off all holiday decor.

No one seems to be quite sure why shoppers are waiting last minute.

"It's the last thing on my mind that I have to go do shopping," Trotter admitted.

Maybe it's just human nature.

Or maybe it's because Thanksgiving fell late on the holiday calendar this year, creating the shortest shopping season in 11 years.

"When I close here tonight, I'm going to be running to Target and all around. I'm obviously not the only person doing that," Trotter told WDRB.

Some shoppers said waiting last minute is strategic.  They said sometimes that's when you find the bargains.
