LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Four Louisville teens who died in a crash in 2008 were honored Wednesday at a wreath laying service.
The ceremony was particularly poignant since the father of three of the young men killed died himself last year while working to erect the memorial.
Jamar, Demar, and Marc Claybrooks died, along with their friend, Aaron Shields, back in 2008. The four young men were riding in a stolen vehicle driven by Herbert Lee, Jr. who was fleeing from police at the time.
The Claybrooks brothers and Shields were just teenagers at the time of their deaths. The Claybrooks' father, Marc Hampton, worked for several years to bring the Garden of Angels memorial to fruition.
The memorial is located at Wilson Ave. and Cypress St. in the Park Duvalle neighborhood.
Family members, friends, and community activists gathered at the memorial to lay wreaths for the four teens on Wednesday afternoon.
They say it's time for all violence in the west end to stop.
Robin Shields, the mother of one of the victims, says she's committed to maintaining the memorial after Hampton's death.
The Shields family say they would like the memorial to transform from a place to mourn into a place for families to come together in peace and hope.
