LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- Some call it the best rivalry in college basketball.

"It brings out the best in both teams and brings out the best in the fan bases and everyone has a good time. It's almost like its own holiday," Dustin Yazell told WDRB.

"Oh I think it's super. Especially since U of L came up to UK's level , it became a much greater rivalry than it was before," said David Knopper.

Most of the fans that stayed in Louisville to watch the battle of the bluegrass did so by choice.

"This is so much more fun really. Hanging out here," said Knopper.

"We kind of stake our claim. We try not to mix too much in here," added Yazell.

Red outnumbered blue at most bars in Louisville but that didn't keep fans from a little friendly trash talk.

"In my youth, U of L didn't exist," said David Knopper.

"Well you're very old," added Bill Comstock.

All in good fun of course.

"These games are always crazy. They never go the way they should," said Yazell.

Fans say what gets them so fired up is the history and tradition that comes along with the game.

"Two teams that really don't like each other. Two fan bases. The whole school, story history. It's a lot of fun," Yazell told WDRB.

"We have fans inside right now that have been here for the '80 championship, some for the '86 championship. Watched them here," said Marty Hazelett, owner of the Granville Inn

The Granville Inn claims its the number one U of L bar in the country but it welcomes fans of any team.

"There's a lot of UK fans right here in the heart of Louisville so it keeps it alive more than anywhere else in the state," said Hazelett.

He says it's what keeps things exciting.

"The dunk that Russ Smith had over top that guy. The place erupted like it always does."

UK beat U of L 73 to 66.
