BOZICH | Petrino Leaving WKU To Replace Strong at Louisville

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bobby Petrino has told officials at Western Kentucky that he is leaving as the Hilltoppers' football coach to become the coach at the University of Louisville, a source told WDRB Wednesday.

Petrino was expected to be in Louisville Wednesday evening where his agent, David Dunn of Athletes First, will finalize a contract with U of L athletic director Tom Jurich. He will be announced Thursday morning after a vote by the U of L Athletic Association Board of Directors.

The Louisville job opened last Saturday evening when Charlie Strong departed U of L after four seasons to become the head coach at the University of Texas.

It is uncertain if Petrino will bring any of his assistants with him to U of L, but WKU offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm is expected to be a top candidate to replace Petrino.

Former Louisville sports reporter and current Yahoo! sports columnist Pat Forde was the first to report that the hiring of Petrino by U of L was imminent.

During four years  as University of Louisville's football coach from 2003-06, Petrino was criticized for pursuing other jobs even as he asked U of L for contract extensions. His four U of L teams won 41 of 50 games, including the 2006 Orange Bowl against Wake Forest.

Petrino had a 34-17 record at Arkansas, but was fired for what was called a "pattern of misleading" behavior.  That was after a motorcycle crash in which Petrino said at first he was the only person on the motorcycle.  Later, he admitted former Razorback football staffer Jessica Dorrell was with him.  It was also revealed that Petrino was having an affair with Dorrell, and that he had given her $20,000 in gifts.

Petrino says he's been in counseling since then, and has been rebuilding his relationship with his wife, Becky, and his four children. Petrino's team finished 8-4 at WKU this season. The Hilltoppers delivered victories against Kentucky and Navy.
