LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local teenager who gives coats to the needy each winter gave away more this year than ever before.
Makenzie Smith started "Makenzie's Coat Closet" when she was only in the second grade. Now, she's a freshman in high school, and broke a record this year by collecting more than 4,400 coats, plus hats, gloves and scarves.
Today, people came to St. Vincent de Paul's Open Hand Kitchen to pick out the warm clothing.
"I like being at the end because I get to see them as they go out and see how something so simple can make someone so happy," Smith said. "And I get to see their faces and tell them to have a nice day, and that I hope the rest of the winter for them is going to be warm now that they have a coat."
