Adopt a Platoon benefits soliders all over the world

Posted: Updated:

FORT KNOX, Ky. (WDRB) --Several signs on the base at Fort Knox say "strength starts here." That statement reigns true for many of the men and women beginning their military careers on the base, but for Sgt. Mark Dube and Specialist Ian Thoman, perhaps the signs should read "strength continues here."

"I've had bullets whiz over my head, and explosions happen less than 500 meters from me," Sgt. Dube explained.

The two men have seen things some of us couldn't imagine in the worst of our dreams.

"You just go through it day by day, and if you remain unscathed then you're good," Dube continued.

They've lost friends and they've fought for our country in a place where some people consider them the enemies. Many of their missions are in the middle of nowhere on a helicopter, or out in the dessert, where supplies are scarce. At least they were scarce,  before generosity started coming in  the form of packages from back home in the US.

"When somebody wanted some snacks, or a new pair of socks, or some tooth paste, that's where we got most of it, from this Adopt a Platoon program," Specialist Thoman said.

Adopt a Platoon is a program set up for anyone to send care packages to soldiers overseas. Food, baby wipes, maybe a nice letter, it all helps the men who often do without.
Givers usually think of our soldiers around Christmas, but the need is year round.

"It's very comforting. It's extremely helpful to know that there are people out there that are looking out for you, even though you've never met them," said Thoman.

It's often the pick-me-up our soldiers need when rock bottom doesn't seem all that far away, and when strength seems hard to come by.

"Thank you for supporting us," Dube said.
