Deadline almost here for JCPS parents - WDRB 41 Louisville News

District officials offer tips for JCPS enrollment deadline, Jan. 15

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)-- The clock is ticking for parents to enroll their children in JCPS next year.

And district officials want to make sure parents avoid making a common mistake when it comes to choosing a school: it's not all about test scores.

"It kind of lets you know if the children are learning," said parent TeAnna Williams.

Williams is in the process of picking a kindergarten program for her daughter.

"My top two schools were Lincoln Elementary and Kennedy Montessori."

Williams says test scores are at the top of her list; however, they are not the only thing she's looking at.

"I did my research on which school better fits her personality and then I just went from there."

That research led Williams to Lincoln Elementary School.

"Because she's a dancer and an actress so, and that's a performing arts school," Williams explained.

"Anytime a parent calls me and says 'what would be great school to send my student?' I say, 'tell me about your student," said JCPS spokesperson Ben Jackey.

Jackey says Williams is actually on the right track in her search.

"What do they like, what do they like to tinker with, what excites them, what gets their attention, how do they like to learn."

Jackey says those are all questions parents should ask themselves when choosing a school, rather than just focusing on test scores.

"It is very easy to go on a website right now and look at a school report card and say, 'there's a test score, well then that must be the best school.'"

Jackey says finding the right fit is crucial: "It's important that people know that no matter where they go, if they find the right fit for their student then their student can succeed."

TeAnna Williams says that's exactly what she did and why she's confident Lincoln is the best fit for her student.

"They're known for performing arts, they're really good. I toured the school, I loved the school, so, I went for it."

Parents can register at the Parent Assistance Center on Bishop Lane until 7 p.m. on Wednesday or online until midnight.
