LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - One person was killed in a house fire in St. Matthews this morning.
Firefighters battled not only flames but piles of clutter as they tried to reach 73-year-old Dennis Ridge, who was trapped inside a burning home on Willis Avenue near Cannons Lane around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"I'll just say the house wasn't well kept," said Rick Tonini with the St. Matthews Fire Department. "It definitely was a problem both putting out the fire and rescuing the gentleman."
Tonini said Ridge was taken from the home, but could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Autopsy results are pending.
Officials haven't yet said what caused the fire, but did say it started in the back of the home, in the kitchen. Arson investigators say the fire does not appear suspicious.
The investigation has been handed over to Louisville Metro Arson.
