Ind. state senators to vote on bill to allow Christmas in the classroom

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Christmas in the classroom: that's what Indiana students could be learning about if lawmakers approve a bill to allow holiday celebrations in school.

The state Senate's education committee is set to vote on a bill on Wednesday afternoon. It would let schools teach the history of winter celebrations such as Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

Children and teachers could exchange a "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hanukkah" greeting in class, and schools could decorate for the holidays, if they don't encourage any particular religion.

Schools could also put up Nativity scenes if another religion is also represented.
