Soldier dad surprises daughter at Hardin Co. school

SONORA, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you want to know the sacrifice thousands of Kentucky families are still making because of the war in Afghanistan, look no further than a Hardin County 6-year-old.

"Every day she brings him up and it's different this time because of the fact she's older," said Lindsey Owen's mother, Melanie Owens.

Around Fort Knox, it's commonplace to have parents away at war.

"I was gone this time 9 months," said Staff Sgt. Jon Owens.

The only positive thing about Staff Sgt. Jon Owens' all too frequent deployments are the unforgettable reunions when he returns.

Wednesday, Jan. 22 is reunion day.

Lindsey doesn't suspect a thing, but her teacher and father have been planning this for months.

"They have such a sacrifice to give up their parents when they're deployed," said Creekside Elementary teacher Sue Ellen Langley.

"If I'm able to surprise her in this way how much better can it get?" said Staff Sgt. Owens.

In the modest cafeteria at Creekside Elementary School, the whole school witnessed the priceless reaction from the first grader.

Overcome with emotion, she burst into tears.

But, it's what her dad expected, and who can blame her?

"Last time when I came home she just cried. Why are you crying? I don't know I'm just happy," said Staff Sgt. Owens.

The two get reacquainted over a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Lindsey is missing a few more teeth.

"Every night I would sleep with my daddy doll so it would make me cheer up," she said.

"Honestly I didn't expect her to be that shocked but she was," said Staff Sgt. Owens.

"I was just excited. I was happy," said the first grader.

Lindsey can't seem to get enough hugs, relieved that her dad is back and her family reunited.

"She's a daddy's girl through and through," said Staff Sgt. Owens.

Lindsey was released from school right after lunch. She, mom, dad and little brother, Tanner, were going to pick out Christmas presents since Staff Sgt. Owens missed Christmas this year.
