LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A local barista is whipping up national attention in a coffee-slinging competition.
Quills Coffee Barista Michael Butterworth took fifth place at the Big Eastern Barista Competition. That placement qualifies him for the United States Barista Championship in April.
Competitors served 3 courses of espresso-based drinks while giving a presentation to a panel of 4 judges. The judges evaluate the drinks' taste, aroma, and visual presentation in addition to the contestant's customer service skills.
Butterworth says this is his first year competing and he's excited to test his skills.
"I'm unlikely to win my first year, so I can just go in, do my best and not worry about how I stack up to the other competition." Butterwoth says, "really it's just an honor to get to represent quills and represent Louisville on a national scale."
