NEWPORT, Ky. (WDRB) --If anyone knows what it's like to feel confined by the long winter months, it's Ashley Rutledge. She home-schools her kids, Hailey and Benjamin.
"We are together 24/7, and it's too cold to go outside and play in the snow," Rutledge explained.
Today they're out of the house, away from the left-over snow, and in a place where it's 75 degrees year round, the Newport Aquarium. It offers hands-on lessons and allows kids and adults alike to go eye to eye with creatures they might not otherwise see.
"You get to see what you read about in so many books-- in real life," Benjamin Rutledge said.
You'll get to see alligators, sharks, and so many other cool animals, but the penguins may be the most popular.
"She carried them around and let everybody pet them, and then we got pictures with them. They're adorable and fun," Hailey Rutledge said.
If the cost of admission might normally be an issue, you're in luck this year. "Winter Family Days" are in progress and run through the end of the month.
"Two kids get in free for the paying price of one adult," Ric Urban, from Newport Aquarium, said.
An affordable, family friendly, warm option, that will have your kids talking for months to come. Not a bad stop for our first "One Tank Trip."
The Newport Aquarium is 100 miles from downtown Louisville. It's open from 9a-6p Saturday, 10a-6p Sunday.
