Appeals court rules against Jefferson Co., Ind. in courthouse fire

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Ind. (WDRB) -- Part of the cost to repair the fire-damaged Jefferson County Courthouse in southern Indiana will not have to be paid back.

The state appeals court says contractors do not have to pay the county for historic courthouse repairs.

Jefferson County had sued three companies, accusing them of negligence in a fire that heavily damaged the bell tower and gutted the third floor as a renovation was wrapping up.

The lawsuit says a worker for one of the companies was welding copper downspouts when nearby combustibles ignited the courthouse.

The court found that the county did not buy a separate insurance plan for that remodeling project.
