LANE | AAC Puts Five in New Top 25

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky moved up four spots to 14th while Louisville moved up one spot to 13 and was joined by four other members of the American Athletic Conference in this week's AP top 25 men's basketball poll.  That group included SMU for the first time since 1985.  Current Mustang head coach, 73-year-old Larry Brown was then in his fifth head coaching position at Kansas.  Seven NBA head coaching jobs followed.  This is Brown's first college head coaching stint since leading Kansas to a national title in 1988.

Syracuse is a consensus number one for the second consecutive week, receiving all 65 first-place votes. The top six remained the same with the Orange followed by Arizona, Florida, Wichita State, San Diego State and Villanova.

AAC teams in the poll include Cincinnati (10th), U of L (13th), Memphis (20th), SMU (23rd) and UConn (24th).

The only other conference with five teams is the Big Ten. They reached that figure with the return of No. 21 Wisconsin and No. 22 Ohio State.  The other returnees from the league are No. 9 Michigan State, No. 15 Michigan and No. 16 Iowa.

The Cardinals return to the court after eight days off with a Thursday night game at Temple.  Four of U of L's last five regular season games are against the other ranked teams in the conference, including three on the road.

Kentucky visits Auburn this Wednesday before welcoming Florida to Rupp Arena Saturday at 9:00 pm
