Metro Corrections inmate dies while in custody

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Metro Corrections inmate has died while in custody, but officials do not suspect any foul play.

John Matthews, age 52, was taken from the jail to University Hospital Wednesday after the jail's medical provider noticed he had low blood pressure and an elevated pulse.

The director of Metro Corrections says Matthews was responsive when jail officials took him to the hospital, but he died about nine hours later of what appears to be natural causes.

The coroner will perform an autopsy.

Police and representatives of Metro Corrections are reviewing the incident, which is standard procedure.
