LANE | Strong Start for Area Baseball/Softball Teams
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U of L, UK and IU all got season-opening baseball wins Friday and the Louisville and Kentucky softball squads continued quick starts to their seasons with tournament wins.
Jeff Gardner's 10th-inning walk-off homer capped a 7-6 comeback victory over West Virginia at the Homewood Suites Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina. Louisville meets the host school, the Citadel Saturday at 2:30 and then closes out the tournament with a 10:00 am game Sunday against Delaware.
Kentucky used a four-run fourth and a solid outing from preseason All-American A.J. Reed to beat top-ranked Virginia 8-3 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Austin Cousino, Max Kuhn and Thomas Bernal all had multiple-hit games to lead the Wildcat offense. UK plays host UNC-Wilmington Saturday at 4:00 pm.
3rd-ranked Indiana opened with a 1-0 victory over Texas Tech in Lubbock. Joey DeNato, who threw a complete-game shutout in last year's World Series, went six innings for his 25th career win. The Left-hander needed just 66 pitches, allowing three hits and striking out two. Sam Travis' Sacrifice Fly scored Will Nolden with the game's only run in the top of the first. IU plays a doubleheader with the Red Raiders Saturday.
23rd-ranked U of L Softball beat host Jacksonville 5-0 behind the combined two-hit pitching of Rachel LeCoq and Caralisa Connell. Junior Kelsi Jones was 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base. The Cardinals are now 4-2 and meet Notre Dame at 9:30 Saturday morning in Jacksonville.
The 7th-ranked UK Softball team got a pair of wins Friday at the Texas Classic in Austin. Lauren Cumbuss threw the second no-hitter of her career in a 1-0 victory over Louisiana Tech. Griffin Joiner hit a two-run homer and extended her hitting streak to seven games as the Cats beat 15th-ranked Texas in the nightcap, 6-4, their 7th straight win to start the season. Kentucky finishes the round-robin portion of play against IPFW at 11:00 am Saturday.
