New fire training technology saves lives and money

SCOTTSBURG, In. (WDRB) --When they get the call, every second counts. What they'll encounter after they put on their gear, and flip the lights and siren on could be anything.

"When you go into a fire, it's like closing your eyes, you can't see where you're going," Scottsburg Fire Chief James Richey said.

On a lot of days, Scottsburg firefighters have two parts of their mission-- getting rid of the flames and smoke, and getting out.

A new training tool will help them do that.

"It's about as close as you could get to an actual structure fire," Richey explained.

It's called the Bull Ex Digital Fire Training System. When you take a closer look it's basically a TV screen with LED lighting behind it, showing a digital fire. There are different intensities to choose from, and a smoke machine connected to add to the effect.

The Scottsburg Fire Department is one of only 12 places in the country to have this kind of technology.

"We can take it to residential houses, we can take it to industrial facilities," said Richey.

It's simple, but most firefighters will tell you it's a piece of equipment that will save buildings, possessions, and most importantly, lives when it counts.

The chief also said the technology will save the department a lot of money over the next several years.
