LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Bellarmine University men's basketball team opened postseason play today with an 82-69 victory over the William Jewell Cardinals in an opening round game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Sunday at Knights Hall.
The Knights had fans sweating it out though with 6:28 left in the second half. William Jewell tied the game at 65, after Bellarmine had led by as many as 20 early in the second half.
BU then went rattled off 11 straight points and ended the game on a 17-4 run.
Bellarmine's Vance Hall tied his career high with 28 points to lead all scorers, and Jake Thelen posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Head Coach Scott Davenport wouldn't answer whether he thought his team needs one or two more wins in the GLVC Tournament to get into the NCAA Division-II Tournament, only saying, "one will take care of the other."
In other words, if the Knights win the GLVC Tournament, they won't have to worry about getting into the NCAA Tournament.
Vance Hall said he thought the Knights probably need two more wins, but regardless, Friday is another must-win game for Bellarmine.
Bellarmine (21-6, 12-6) will now face co-GLVC East Division Champion Indianapolis (23-3, 15-3) in the 9:30 p.m. nightcap on Friday in Evansville, Indiana.
