Four schools at Fort Knox to close as Duke Brigade deactivates

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The departure of 3,500 soldiers and their families from Fort Knox is forcing four schools to close due to a decrease in student enrollment.

The Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary School system announced Tuesday that the following schools would close at the end of the 2013-14 school year:

  • Kingsolver Elementary School
  • Mudge Elementary School
  • Pierce Elementary School
  • Walker Intermediate School

The deactivation of the 3rd Combat Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, better known as the Duke Brigade, resulted in the loss of approximately 700 students, according to a press release.

The Duke Brigade was the last combat brigade at Fort Knox.

DDESS officials say the following schools will remain open and restructured:

  • Fort Knox High School, Grades 9-12
  • Scott Middle School, Grades 6-8
  • MacDonald Intermediate School, Grades 1-5
  • VanVoorhis Elementary School, Pre-K-5

Officials say the district's top priority is lessening the negative effect on civilian employees and ensuring quality education for students.
