Gov. Beshear defends decision to appeal gay marriage ruling

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- Gov. Steve Beshear says the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the U.S. Supreme Court.

At the state Capitol Wednesday, Beshear spoke about his decision to appeal Judge Heyburn's ruling that would give same sex couples married legally in other states rights in Kentucky.

Beshear says any change this big needs to be clear for healthare providers, employers and government agencies.

"All of these folks around the country need to know what the rules of the road will be and I think it is imperative upon us to participate in that process and get that decision as quickly as we can," he said.

Kentucky's governor says he's convinced that if he didn't decide to appeal, other lawsuits would follow.

"We don't need legal chaos in this state for the next few months or year or two while this issue is being determined. It needs to be done in an orderly fashion so that everybody knows what the rules are and we can act accordingly," Beshear said.

Beshear says he will hire outside counsel for the appeal. He declined to comment about his personal views on gay marriage.
