LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — It's been an All-American kind of day for University of Louisville guard Russ Smith.
The Cardinals' senior has been named a first-team All-American today by The Sporting News, NBC Sports and The Bleacher Report.
Smith became the first U of L player since Pervis Ellison to be a preseason Associated Press All-American before this season. He won third-team honors last season from the AP, Sporting News and National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Late last week, he also was named a finalist for the Wooden Award, which goes annually to college basketball's best player.
Smith has played in 127 games in his U of L career. He has gotten a steal in 103 of them. He's coming off a season finale against Connecticut where he had 13 assists, third-most in a game in U of L history. As a senior, he is averaging 17.5 points per game, shooting 39 percent from three-point range, and averaging 4.9 assists per contest.
