Holiday Hero Blood Drive March 12 aims to remedy blood shortage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Blood donors can get into the spirit of St. Patrick's Day on Wednesday at the annual Holiday Hero St. Patrick's blood drive.

American Red Cross spokeswoman Lindsay English says people who give blood at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Phillips Lane can enjoy Irish stew and potato soup. Donors will also get a free green Red Cross T-shirt and be eligible to win Panera bagels for a year.

The Red Cross says it was hit hard by this winter's harsh weather and blood drive cancellations across the country. Local Red Cross officials say they've lost nearly 1800 units of blood since early December, due to canceled blood drives. The agency needs to collect about 375 units every day to support local hospital needs.

Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. People who come to donate blood need a blood donor card, a driver's license or two other forms of identification to check in.

Today's blood drive starts at noon and will go through 7:00 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 830 Phillips Lane.

To make an appointment to donate blood, you can call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org.
