Ky. lawmakers urgently considering waivers for school makeup days

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky lawmakers are hammering out a decision concerning snow makeup days.

Considering there are some school districts in Kentucky with as many as 30 snow days and other districts like JCPS that have yet to make a decision about graduation, there is a sense of urgency for lawmakers to make a decision.

The Kentucky House has included an emergency line item in its version of the budget.

If approved, Commissioner of Education Terry Holliday would entertain requests from school districts to waive a maximum of 10 days that districts would no longer have to make up.

A separate bill, House Bill 410, has also been filed in the House that calls for the education commissioner to take the same action but it wouldn't be tied to the budget.

House Speaker Greg Stumbo says that's the better of the two options.

"The separate house bill is actually the best way and the reason is districts need some definitive answers and the budget bill likely will not be passed until the very end of the regular session. So I think it will be better for the district to give them some definitive answers so they can plan their calendars," Stumbo said.

JCPS has pushed back the last day of school to June 12. The school district is waiting to see what Kentucky legislators will do before announcing firm high school graduation dates.

Now both the budget and House Bill 410 would have to be approved by the Senate as the end of the school year draws ever nearer.
