Crestwood 5K benefits family of man who died while running

CRESTWOOD, Ky. (WDRB) -- People took to the pavement Saturday morning to remember a friend and also to help others remember, that life is short.

Kenny Gilliland was out for a run in 2012 in Crestwood when he suddenly collapsed and died.
He had no previous heart problems.

Those who knew him best, started up an 5k-10k walk to benefit his family. All proceeds from the race go to them.

"He had left a lot of debt for his wife" participant Amber Miller said, "so every year we are going to try and raise money for her and her girls until they don't need it anymore, and then after that Plan to use the money they don't need to help others who lose their husbands unexpectedly to pay for funeral costs."

This was the second year of the race. Walkers and runners say not only are participants helping the Gilliland family right now but soon, others too.

Nearly 150 people turned out for the race, which started and ended at the South Oldham Fire Station on Old LaGrange Road in Crestwood.
